ARTIST STATEMENT
If I could distill one of the key items I have learned during my undergraduate studies, it is my increasing appreciation for comics and graphic novels--both in the sense of the written portion and the visual aspect. Through a couple of classes, I have learned to better understand and relate to the ways in which this particular form of media can be created, as well as how they can be used in order to tell a compelling story. Because of this, I have been able to combine two worlds that are becoming increasingly interconnected within my mind that are key in constructing this type of work and to express this new-found love through a tangible set of cohesive work in itself.

Using common materials that have been shown to me to be equally as adequate as "fancy"--and expensive--art supplies, such as yellow legal pad paper and black gel pens, I have created a series of graphic novel-esque pages that I hope I can continue to work on and flesh out into a more fuller form. As I have worked, I have pulled from memories that have left unkind imprints and scars on my life over the past two years, though they have shaped it and taught me valuable lessons nonetheless, as well as drawn from inspiration I have learned about while in undergraduate studies, mainly the work of Lynda Barry. The end result is seemingly two-fold: a visual product that showcases my artistic abilities with a pen and paper, yes, but also a story that I cannot seem to stop replaying in my mind and telling to those around me.
